Field Trip, Freshman Architecture Department Visits Songyang Small Volume Building Project

On May 9, freshman students and professional teachers from the School of Architecture and Design went to Songyang, Lishui, Zhejiang to inspect physical buildings and participated in the inspection. This visit coincides with the freshman STUDIO 1102 drawing design week, and the small-scale construction project is the focus of students' current study. The holding of activities not only added a little joy to the intense study, but also provided students with rich examples.

The delegation visited Songyang Tofu Factory, Old Residential House of Shicang, Shicang Indenture Museum Profile, Wangjing Memorial Hall Commentary, Brown Sugar Factory, etc. With the small-scale buildings design by DnA Architects studio as the mainline. The professors carefully explained the project site, design points, and structural features to the students at each location. Songyang Tofu Factory and the Shicang Indenture Museum Profile drew the attention of the entire department.

"The Tofu Factory building blends in with the village environment and follows the original trend of the terrain, stretching upward from the entrance." Vincent said, "The building features follow the process of production up the terrain steps, advancing spatially one by

one according to the process of tofu making."

On the east side of the building, a breezeway is set up to match the building's orientation. Visitors can follow the staircase sequence to see the tofu production process. The factory uses pine wood as the structural system to achieve modern factory production purposes while echoing the traditional mortise-and-tenon houses in the village."

The Shicang Indenture Museum Profile walls are all made of local stone masonry, which blends in with the environment like a retaining wall on a riverbank or terraces on a hill when viewed from a distance. The north and south sides of the building form a semi-enclosed courtyard, suggesting entrances and exits, and also create a dialogue with the environment, especially the north side, which is connected to the village and together encloses a small square, providing an open space for outdoor activities in the town.

The special masonry structure of the Shicang Indenture Museum Profile was an eye-opener for everyone. The designers set tie stones by the code requirements, and the main bearing walls and corner locations are made of slurry block walls with staggered joints at the top and bottom. This material and construction reflect the structure force logic. The combination of different forms of stone and natural light and darkness creates a deep space atmosphere. It also provides a remarkable example for the students' final design.

The field trip focused on small-volume buildings in Songyang, intending to provide students with more examples of small-volume buildings. It is also to deepen the understanding of architectural structure and space. "Currently, we are focusing on structural research, and we hope we can combine theory and practice. After the students have some theory, we hope they can be practical and find more knowledge in practice, perceive architecture in practice, and touch the pulse of architecture in practice," said Vincent.

As a special teaching mode of the School of Architecture and Design, field trips have been widely integrated into the teaching process of various professional courses, and field trips have been organized to Shanghai, Suzhou, Hangzhou, Shenzhen and other domestic cities, as well as overseas visits to Paris, Rome and Greece.
