Wenzhou: A Tale of Two Languages. Hello everyone, this is Appreciate Wenzhou, Voice of Kean. Welcome to our program. This is Roderick from Wenzhou-Kean University. This is Ann from Wenzhou-Kean University.Roderick: The warm summer breeze has sounded the restlessness of June. I have a question for you. Ann, as a student, when you mention June, what will you think of? Ann: Talking about June, the first thing I think of is the graduation season! Because recently, I just saw the seniors of our school have put on bachelor's uniforms and are ready to graduate! R: That's really cool! I remember that wearing graduation gown when students graduate is a very old tradition, dating back to the 12th century. At that time, the graduation gown was because the heating capacity of the original university was poor, and students needed to wear robes and hats to keep warm. In the eighth period of Henry, at Cambridge University and Oxford University, the attire of scholars became very uniform. Until the 1800s, they wore black robes. A: But now there are other colors in their graduation gowns, which seems to be to distinguish students' majors.
R: Exactly! These different colors have also become the beautiful scenery in the graduation photo!
这些不同的颜色也变成了毕业照上美丽的风景线!A: In addition to wearing graduation gowns, throwing bachelor hats has also become a tradition. The scene of a group of students throwing their hats into the air together is really spectacular! R: So, do you know the origin of throwing academic caps? A: Of course! Before 1912, graduates of the U.S. Naval Academy needed to spend two years as soldiers in the Marine Corps, and their hats must be well worn at all times. In 1912, it was stipulated those graduates should be appointed as officers immediately, which meant that graduates no longer wear old caps, but new officers' hats. Therefore, when they graduate, scholars will throw their caps in the air to say goodbye to their past self and open up a new future.R:Those traditional graduation customs have a long history, and all have intriguing significance. In addition to traditional customs, many schools have derived their own characteristics in graduation ceremonies for many years, and they are all very interesting!A: 除了传统的习俗以外,很多学校都在多年的毕业典礼中衍生出了自己的特点,并且都非常的有趣!A: Besides the traditions from the United States, can you share with us some interesting customs that people usually have when graduate in other countries?R: I have just come up with one! You can never believe that you will be in such a “mess” if you graduated in Italy. A: Oh really? Come on, tell us!R: In Italy, the graduates often wear a ridiculous costume. Standing in the public, they are often hazed by their friends and family. The well-wishers would take turns to give their best wishes the new graduates, including throwing food and some sauces at them.A: This is interesting! I mean, standing on the street and let your friends and family throw foods to you, wouldn’t that be embarrassed?R: It sounds ridiculous and embarrassed to us. But to the Italians, it actually contains good wishes and approval to their efforts on academic successes. The tradition is congratulating them for the academic achievement.A: A: I have to say that their tradition is really special and it’s interesting to know some unique traditions around the world.R: Of course. Not only other places around the world but also at Wenzhou-Kean we held some special activities to celebrate the graduation of seniors for achieving their academic life as a Bachelor. A: Yes we do! In this summer, on our campus, students are taking some creative graduation photos. People wearing graduation gowns take their unique graduation photos in the basketball courts with their best buddies. And they even brought some banners to emphasize their good wishes and hope for the future.R: Besides, we hold a graduation party for the students that are going to step into the society or proceed their further study. There will be activities like Buffet, photo taking, lucky draw, etc. The party will bring them the one last good memory and best wishes for their future.A: Graduation is a time to leave and also to look back. So, during this time, we also prepared mailbox for the graduates to write to the people the words they may not say in person.A: A: 是的!
J:Graduation means bidding farewell to our alma mater. It means that we have officially bid farewell to our school days and are about to enter society. This is a challenge as well as an opportunity. Ann, do you have anything to say to the seniors who are about to graduate?A:Well, Wish all the graduates have a bright future!J:毕业意味着告别母校,意味着我们正式告别了自己的学生时代,即将步入社会。
