HZAU embraces National Key Laboratory of Crop Genetic Improvement and State Key Laboratory of Agricultural Microbiology, 8 national engineering(technology) research centers, 8 international scientific cooperation bases and is preparatory in building one National Key Major Scientific and Technological Infrastructure. The university has also 77 provincial key laboratories, centers or bases, and many research-sharing platforms, including Electron Microscope Platform, Proteomics Platform, Metabonomics Platform, Bioinformatics High Performance Computing Cluster, Physical and Chemical Analysis Platform, Flow Cell platform, Animal Biosafety Level III Laboratory, Experimental Animal Center, Field Scientific Observation and Research Station.
The Hubei Hongshan Laboratory, designed primarily by HZAU, was formally approved by the Hubei government in December 2020. As an independent organization, it has received huge support from the Hubei government and is among the earliest laboratories that were supported by research grants in Hubei Province. Researchers here conduct basic and applied research on biological genetic improvement, with a focus on plant and animal breeding, to meet the urgent needs in agriculture and food industry, to initiate scientific and technological innovation in plant and animal breeding, and to achieve the overall goal of providing food that is beneficial for both humans and the earth. Research on green, quality, and nutritious crops that are adaptive to climate change is also being carried out here, with the aim to design environmentally-friendly production technologies, to improve food nutrition, to promote sustainable agricultural development, to ensure food security, as well as to improve the well-being of Chinese people.
HZAU is located in one of the major urban areas of Wuhan, Hubei province. Situating in Shizishan (Lion Mountain) and being surrounded by the South Lake, HZAU takes pride in its nine kilometers lake shoreline, five square kilometers campus with picturesque scenery, and ten kilometers “trails in forests”.
