12月15日,2020年国家自然科学奖一等奖获得者、中国科学院院士、广东以色列理工学院访问教授赵东元为广以师生带来一场主题为“用于合成新型多级结构功能介孔材料的界面组装”的线上讲座。他从介孔材料的研究与实验出发,谈到对未来科学世界的畅想。当他谈起自己的研究成果及其应用方向时,字里行间不仅饱含对教学的热爱和对科学的赤诚,更流露出超越“小我”的大情怀。

赵东元教授介绍道,介孔材料具有极高的比表面积、规则有序的孔道结构、狭窄的孔径分布、孔径大小连续可调等特点,使得它在很多微孔沸石分子筛难以完成的大分子的吸附、分离、尤其是催化反应中发挥作用。这些特质都使之有望在化学、生物、物理、材料及信息技术等领域得到广泛的应用。
在介孔材料探索之路上,赵东元教授及其团队反复提问,不断尝试——怎样合成介孔材料?如何组装形成新型结构?怎样实现更高的效率?“球体是很独特的,它不仅有层级,还可以将多种功能集于一身。例如,我们可以培养出具有粗糙表面的球体,使它们快速、准确地附着在肿瘤细胞上,延长其在血液循环中的时间,增加其作用时间。”在赵东元教授的专业讲述中,在场师生们深感科学之美。精益求精的科学家们所取得的每一点突破,都与全人类的福祉和命运息息相关。
在提问环节,广以教师十分关心“广以的同学们是否也能在实验室自己合成介孔材料”。对此,赵东元教授回答道,“我和我的学生们常常在实验室进行实验设计,我们从最简单的球形开始研究,试了很多次才找到简单的方法。你需要通过不断地思考,无数次试验,才能达成目标。但我们中国的学生认真努力,一定会成功!”
赵东元教授的分享让同学们受益匪浅。“赵教授的讲座让我明白我们应该以怎样的状态迎接未来的挑战,要去尝试、创新、总结。我们眼下在做的事情不只是为了自己,它的意义早已远超‘小我’,更是作为国家乃至世界一份子的责任感!”广以2021级欧阳泽宇同学如是说。

On December 15th, Prof. Zhao Dongyuan, the first-prize winner of the 2020 National Natural Science Award, Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and Visiting Professor of Guangdong Technion - Israel Institute of Technology (GTIIT), gave an online lecture titled "Interfacial Assembly for the Synthesis of Novel Hierarchical Functional Mesoporous Materials" to GTIIT teachers and students. Starting from the research and experiments of mesoporous materials, he shared his imagination of the future science. When he talked about his research result and its application, he showed his passion for teaching and science, as well as the determination to make contributions to science.

Prof. Zhao Dongyuan introduced that mesoporous materials have the characteristics of extremely high specific surface area, regular and orderly pore structure, narrow aperture distribution, and continuously adjustable aperture size, which make it play a role in the adsorption and separation of macromolecules that are difficult for many microporous zeolites molecular sieve to complete, especially in the catalytic reaction. These features are expected to be widely adopted in fields of chemistry, biology, physics, materials and information technology.
On the way to explore mesoporous materials, Prof. Zhao Dongyuan and his team repeatedly raised questions, and constantly tried - how to synthesize mesoporous materials? How to assemble and form a new structure? How to achieve more efficiency? "The sphere is unique. It not only has layers, but also integrates a variety of functions in one. For example, we can culture spheres with rough surfaces that allow them to quickly and accurately attach to tumor cells, extending their duration in the blood circulation and increasing their time of action." In the lecture, the teachers and students felt the beauty of science. Every breakthrough made by scientists is closely related to the well-being and destiny of all mankind.
In the Q&A session, GTIIT teachers were very concerned about "whether our students can synthesize mesoporous materials in the laboratory". Prof. Zhao Dongyuan replied, "My students and I often conduct experimental design in the laboratory. We started with the simplest sphere and tried many times to find simple methods. You need to keep thinking and trying to reach your goal. The quality of diligence Chinese students own will help you succeed!"
The lecture benefited students a lot. "Prof. Zhao's experience made me understand how we should meet the future challenges, and encouraged me to try, to innovate and to summarize. What we are doing right now is not only for ourselves, but also as a sense of responsibility for the country and even the world!" said Ouyang Zeyu, a GTIIT student from the Class of 2025.
