Mr Rory：Language learning Talk – Trust the Process!

Rory Anthony Berrill

My name is Rory Anthony Berrill and I am from The Republic of Ireland. I received a bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design from IADT and a bachelor’s degree in Education, majoring in TESOL from Siam University. I am also certified to teach Early Childhood education. This will be my second year at GHS after 14 years teaching in Thailand, Germany and Ireland.

Language learning, in our case, English, is difficult to learn. Difficulties such as the skills, aspects and practice involved (the weight) can, and almost always, lead learners to confusion, questioning the importance and the will to continue to learn, which in turn leads to confusion and in some cases, discontinuing leaarning the language.

However, there are answers to this. TIME! Everything that is worth doing and doing well takes time. Learning a language is not a linear process, it’s filled with ups and downs and plenty of plateaus. And today, I want all learners to understand this plateau, it does not mean your learning has stopped or you’re going backwards, it’s only the natural process of learning a language. Your job in this process is to trust it, trust your teachers, trust the materials, trust your classes, and most importantly trust yourself, you will get through it.

The takeaway from my ‘talk’ is never get too low, thinking nothing can be achieved or too high, you’ve learned all there is to learn, but find solace in the middle! Contentment and comfort with the idea, in the same way you learned your fist language, Chinese, you will certainly learn that second language, English. Always look for progress never perfection, follow this and I promise you’ll get there!

English classes always pass quickly, not only because I have a good teacher, but we find the happiness during this English time. That’s all because of Mr. Rory. Our teacher, Mr. Rory, translates our English study into a combination of using and thinking. Our vocabulary learning turns into a big topic and thought, along with fun and exciting English language items such as idioms. The process of reciting our words has become much easier and more enjoyable. Mr. Rory always finds a unique and special practice to teach us which means I can feel my progress greatly with my English technique and my thought process. I recently had a presentation in Mr. Rory’s English class, which lead me to think deeply about Mr. Rory’s class and how my English class is now indispensable for me. Mr. Rory has taught us a lot of knowledge and all the English language needed to put it into practice. In Mr. Rory’s classes I feel relaxed and his words are easy for me to understand. The atmosphere in his classes are always interesting and lively. Mr. Rory always asks us to open our minds and be creative, while thinking about the possibilities of a question. Also, he is very patient which helps us in our listening or reading exercises. Mr. Rory is an excellent and outstanding teacher for me, and I hope I can study with him for a long time.

Mr. Rory came to Guanghua over one year ago. He has become not only my teacher but my friend and supervisor. He’s very skilled at teaching. He teaches us all our English skills, such as listening and speaking, and figurative language, which I really enjoy. We also gain native expressions and world knowledge. I have performed many English speeches and Mr. Rory is the one who I go through them with. He has taught me a lot in my speaking skills, such as presentations and speeches, as well as many writing tricks which can be seen in our textbooks. We have created some brilliant speeches together. I also enjoy chatting with Mr. Rory. He’s always willing to ask me about my opinions on the interesting topics we learn in class, and I try to absorb life’s philosophy through his words of wisdom.

My English class with Mr. Rory is fantastic. I get excited, even before Mr. Rory’s class, unlike some of my other subjects. Mr. Rory has a rich experience who always finds some cooperative tasks to not only help us improve our English but also our abilities to work together and our creativity, even drawing! In his class Mr. Rory is a humorous teacher who helps relax and sometimes regain our attention. Our homework is always corrected intensively to help us with any errors we have and when I have questions Mr. Rory takes time with me to answer patiently, he gives us the best care. We love our English class very much.
