Grasp the pulse of the times

With the development idea of “establish the city with industry, strengthen the city with industry”, Shantou’s development as part of Special Economic Zone has aroused concern from local industry and academia.

Prof. Xu Zongling from School of Business of Shantou University (STU) shared her thoughts on the planning of enterprise in the fine chemical industry based on local needs.

Shang Jianzhuang, the senior engineer of China National Petroleum and Chemical Planning Institute, analyzed the development policies, markets and opportunities of the fine chemical industry in China, and made suggestions based on the status quo of Shantou.

While strategies point out the way, management is the oar of development. Prof. Liang Qiang from STU School of Business used accessible examples to explain the wisdom of Chinese studies embedded in modern management.

Stay on top of academic trends

Prof. Kong Bo from GTIIT’s Chemical Engineering program introduced the research teams and projects and led participants to visit the university’s research labs so that they could learn the latest research progress and communicate with researchers face to face.

Biomanufacturing is widely adopted in fields of energy, molecular diagnostics and medicine. In this regard, Prof. Xu Peng from Chemical Engineering program introduced its importance in transforming the traditional manufacturing mode.

Prof. Ji-Dong Gu from Environmental Science and Engineering program introduced the role of environmental biotechnology for sustainable development from the aspect of civilization and material science.

Prof. Bo Kong said that numerical simulation can quickly achieve significant improvements in production processes, but the current challenges need to be addressed through solid scientific research work and close integration with practice.

Dr. Dong Zhengya from Guangdong Provincial Laboratory of Chemistry and Fine Chemicals introduced the application of microreactors in the field of fine chemicals and pharmaceuticals. He believed that high-end equipment should also serve enterprises to better utilize their value.

Harvest from experience

The Training invited guests from enterprises to give lectures around the common issues, key aspects, and the market of the fine chemical industry.

Dr. Tian Na from GHTECH and Dr. Chen Peng from Sirio Pharma Co., Ltd shared ideas of technology research, development and application, taking their own cases as examples.

Digital transformation played an important role in pursuing municipal and national development. Chen Xinhe, Head of Data Intelligence Digital Transformation College, dissected its strategic planning, implements, measures and cases and further offered advice on marketing.

Intellectual property protection is crucial for the industry since it faces both opportunities and risks. Xu Yudong, the patent analyst from Scihead Intellectual Property, started from the introduction, operation, protection and management of intellectual property rights, and explained how to apply for patent and trademark protection, which were crucial to the fine chemical industry. Her lecture pointed out the targeted way and was rewarding for participants.

Cooperate for development

The Training integrated theory with practice. Through visiting Guangdong Provincial Laboratory of Chemistry and Fine Chemicals and Guangdong Longhu Sci. & Tech. Company Limited, participants were able to acquire operating experiences and digest what they had learned in this workshop.

During the seminar, participants aired their views on topics involving green development, introducing talents and university-enterprise cooperation. Representatives of GTIIT teaching staff offered suggestions accordingly.

Participants from the household chemical industry indicated that the lack of high-tech input in the local industry of this field has made it heavily reliant on imported raw materials. Dr. Xu Peng, Associate Professor of GTIIT’s Chemical Engineering program, proposed that it is necessary to increase the investment in basic research, strengthen the cooperation between university and enterprises and facilitate win-win cooperation.

Sewage treatment has come to the fore in the chemical industry. To deal with questions about advanced measures from enterprises, Prof. Ji-Dong Gu from Environmental Science and Engineering program introduced his research on biodegradation and environmental pollutant and gave practical ideas for enterprises.

Tackle key issues and pains

Prof. Gao Xi, Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering program, and Huang Xiaowu, Assistant Professor of Environmental Science and Engineering Research Group, had in-depth discussions with participants on the prospects and needs of the industry. They said that GTIIT would use its scientific and research strength to support enterprises in tackling problems that hinder development. Prof. Gao Xi also mentioned that other programs of GTIIT could also help solve common scientific problems and promote the integration of manufacturing, education and research.

Raanan Adin, Senior Consultant to Vice-Chancellor, introduced the newly established “GTIIT Technology Entrepreneurship Center (GTEC)”. “GTEC is committed to establishing a system for intellectual property and technology transfer, and to cooperating with industries so that GTIIT’s latest research results can serve the public. We already have cooperation with many local enterprises, and also have close ties with relevant government departments. With its pioneering idea, frontline research facilities and talents, GTIIT will produce more scientific achievements for the people by collaborating with enterprises.”

Enterprise representatives fully affirmed GTIIT’s providing a platform for business negotiation and cooperation. They looked forward to more enterprise-university-research collaborations and leveraging their respective strengths in contributing local economy.
